چکیده

We present the first holographic simulations of non-equilibrium steady state formation in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory 3+1 dimensions. initially join together two thermal baths at different temperatures and chemical potentials compare subsequent evolution combined system to analytic solutions corresponding Riemann problem numeric ideal viscous hydrodynamics. The time energy density that we obtain holographically is consistent with combination a shock rarefaction wave: A wave moves towards cold bath, smooth broadening hot bath. Between waves emerges constant temperature flow velocity, both which are accurately described by shock+rarefaction solution problem. In region, crossover develops between regions charge density. This reminiscent contact discontinuity also results for entanglement entropy crossed find them closely follow

Classical orbital paramagnetism in non-equilibrium steady state

We report the results of our numerical simulation of classical-dissipative dynamics of a charged particle subjected to a non-markovian stochastic forcing. We find that the system develops a steady-state orbital magnetic moment in the presence of a static magnetic field. Very significantly, the sign of the orbital magnetic moment turns out to be paramagnetic for our choice of parameters, varied ...

Percolation-like phase transition in a non-equilibrium steady state

We study the Gierer-Meinhardt model of reaction-diffusion on a site-disordered square lattice. Let p be the site occupation probability of the square lattice. For p greater than a critical value pc, the steady state consists of stripe-like patterns with long-range connectivity. For p < pc, the connectivity is lost. The value of pc is found to be much greater than that of the site percolation th...

Non-Equilibrium Steady States

The mathematical physics of mechanical systems in thermal equilibrium is a well studied, and relatively easy, subject, because the Gibbs distribution is in general an adequate guess for the equilibrium state. On the other hand, the mathematical physics of non-equilibrium systems, such as that of a chain of masses connected with springs to two (infinite) heat reservoirs is more difficult, precis...

Non-equilibrium steady states in supramolecular polymerization

Living systems use fuel-driven supramolecular polymers such as actin to control important cell functions. Fuel molecules like ATP are used to control when and where such polymers should assemble and disassemble. The cell supplies fresh ATP to the cytosol and removes waste products to sustain steady states. Artificial fuel-driven polymers have been developed recently, but keeping them in sustain...

Quasi Steady-State Reduction of Non-linear PDE Models of Cellular Systems & Turing Analysis on Steady-State Pattern Formation

This summer I worked on several projects unrelated to each other. The first project was an extension of what I researched last summer with Dr. Keshet and Dr. Ward. Our group looked at several models of nonlinear motor dynamics in the cell, including kinesins along microtubules, as well as myosins along actin filaments. These models were essentially a collection of nonlinear coupled PDEs describ...
